I think the problem is, when the term “Industrial Design” is throw out into the public, no one has any idea what “industrial” means. “Do you design buildings? Factories?” are some things I’ve heard from people. Don’t get me wrong, you get the same types of questions when “Product Design” is used. I’ve heard arguments for each term. I think using “Industrial” is just a bit more vague, as it originally referred to the mass production of consumer products, using industrial mass-production equipment. If people don’t know the history, and don’t understand that’s where the term originated, then they can be confused. On the other hand, when we say “product design”, the word “product” can me many different things. As you pointed out, in the last few years, “product” as often been associated with digital products, things that aren’t physical.

Sometimes I think that it’s best that industrial/product designers just describe what they do to other people who are asking. But then, you’ll ultimately get this question: “So…you’re an engineer, then?”

Karlene, I came to this country because I couldn’t realize the fullest of my potential, educational wise, where I was. I am only looking to do something good here. I’m not here to stay. As I see it, this proposition may actually add more “brains” into this country and not another (not to say that the US doesn’t have any, it’s just that this is a big country with huge industries). And when the H-1B holders leave, they might be back to invest here. This is about keeping good relations.

This is a bad idea as the H4 visa holders will swell the workforce and exacerbate the unemployment of citizens. In fact, the H-1B visa should be scrapped for any job where the earning is under $120,000, and all sub contracting of H-1B should be banned.
