‘Product Design’ isn’t really dead, but the meaning of it has changed dramatically in last few years.
I graduated last year with a BFA in Product Design but now I find the terminology confusing while job hunting for both companies and future employees.
I just noticed this add on the Pinterest jobs board. While I might be a Product Designer on paper I don’t fit the job description.
Why don’t we make it easier on ourselves.
Industrial Design is a well known (relativity) profession with distinct (yet slightly loose) description. Industrial Design pertains to the physical consideration of object interaction. Product design (also interaction) has to do with an interaction as a whole but mostly pertains to digital interaction. For defining the profession, ‘Industrial Design’, it’s a good start.
So why do they still distribute degrees in ‘Product Design’?
It does not mean one can’t be both. That might be the future of product design. But why not make it easier and define It just for the sake of job hunting. A process that is not always that fun to begin with.
